Income tax in NJ is just 10%?

And you americans complain about taxes, I pay 27.5% income tax.

We also complain about our crumbling infrastructure and out of date schools.

Most Americans know less about correlations than a pigeon pecking a button in a cage.

That’s the state portion. Federal cap is 39%, I believe. State is on top of that.

Yes, but that’s in addition to federal income tax. If Freddy actually made $500,000 a year, his combined tax rate would be about 48%.

Kinja'd!!! My citroen won't start > Tekamul
09/08/2016 at 21:14

But that’s for the top brackets and you have 0- 10% sales tax.

We have 27.5% for everyone earning over $2k a month plus a 17 - 25% sales tax and 100% import tax.

That was my first thought, but 8.9% is exactly the top bracket, so that seems a little too coincidental. I think he probably just googled “NJ tax rate” and grabbed a random number.

Huh, didn’t know about that, I guess you make up for it in low import and sales taxes.

Also, how come you can pay almost 50% income tax and still don’t have universal healthcare?

Oh, I’m not looking for a contest on taxes, I know US taxes are low. I just didn’t want to let the wrong impression stand.

In the US geography contributes a lot to your total taxes. But in general, they’re low, and if you’re at the bottom or top of the food chain, they’re extra low.

1) because we’re idiots.

2) Because anyone who earns enough to be in the top tax bracket in the US and actually pays top tax bracket taxes on all of their income is either very, very honest, or very, very stupid.

Kinja'd!!!7

Constitutional? Nope. The current law under the affordable care act does require all people to have some form of health insurance, either purchased privately, acquired through their employer, or government-subsidized (which people under a certain income are eligible for). However, health care providers (doctors, hospitals, etc) can choose which insurers they accept. So a hospital/doctor’s office can choose not to accept any of the low-income, subsidized insurance, effectively turning away the person or forcing them to pay full price themself.

Murica.

It’s bad for people like my mom. She teaches at the college level part time, and she had to take a huge pay/class cut because of ObamaCare. If she worked more hours, then they’d have to pay insurance. My family already has good insurance through my dad’s company.

Preaching to the choir my friend. Unfortunately the insurance companies, their influences, and their lobbyists have done a great job convincing us that having private, selectable companies is better than universal health care.

I'm thinking he means 8.9% less versus what he was paying. For example: 20% in NJ and 11.1% in Florida

I doubt Jalopnik is his only job. I don’t know his situation there but my guess is ”part-time writer”. Writer positions start at 45k$ at gawker media, average being around 60/65k$ and go up to 150k$ probably for people like Max Read and so on. So not much, especially when considering many live in NYC.

They gave a detailed summary of salaries at Gawker during the Vice vs Gawker thing:)

Nope. The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) requires everyone to have insurance (or pay a penalty). We have a program called Medicare that provides insurance for the elderly, and a program called Medicaid that provides it for the poor. The problem is that Medicaid is administered at the state level, and while some states provide good coverage, other states do a terrible job (I live in Texas, and unless you are a single mother or pregnant, you’ll have a very hard time getting coverage through Medicaid). Obamacare was supposed to expand Medicare to cover everyone up to a certain point (and provide funding), but the courts ruled that the states did not have to do so, so many Republican controlled states have rejected the expansion. This is especially galling since while Obamacare provides subsidies to help lower income people purchase health insurance, only people above the expanded Medicaid minimum qualify, so there can be a gap where people can’t get Medicaid, but are too poor to qualify for ACA subsidies, and the Republicans in Congress hate Obamacare enough so they won’t allow the simple fix of getting rid of the minimum for people who can’t get Medicaid coverage.

Now all that said, Hospitals are not allowed to turn people away just because they can’t pay (not that they don’t try to avoid giving services to the uninsured). The uninsured are far more likely to be told they don’t need care or sent away without adequate tests and treatment. The uninsured have the additional problem that the “list prices” for treatment are extraordinarily high (insurers negotiate steep discounts for their members), and it is extraordinarily difficult to get hospitals to give you prices on procedures ahead of time.

No. Life, liberty, and happiness is actually life, liberty, and property. Health and thus happiness don’t mean shit. As has been pointed out by others, we’re only mandated to spend money paying for health insurance that’s often crap. This is because the insurance and pharmaceutical industries were allowed to craft policy in the ACA, when really they should just be told to get fucked.

27.5% state income tax?! You need a new to find a new  accountant, or move. That's insane! How much is your federal tax?!? As far as I can tell Iowa has the highest state income tax at 12%
